HOW TO PREPARE FOR CIP RANCHI M.Clin.Psy./MPHIL CLINICAL PSY

The Central Institute of Psychiatry (CIP), Ranchi is one of India’s oldest and most prominent mental health institutions. Located in Kanke, Ranchi, Jharkhand, the institute functions under the administrative control of the Directorate General of Health Services, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.

CIP has a long history of training Clinical Psychologists and previously conducted the M.Phil. Clinical Psychologyprogramme. With the discontinuation of M.Phil. Clinical Psychology, CIP is now transitioning to the new Master in Clinical Psychology (M.Clin.Psy.) programme.

CIP’s M.Clin.Psy. approval is currently under process and, based on the latest information available to us, is in the final stages of approval. The final RCI-approved intake, category-wise seat distribution, stipend and admission notification are therefore still awaited.

Age Limit: No specific age limit is prescribed in the current RCI M.Clin.Psy. guidelines. Candidates should check the CIP prospectus once released for any institute-specific condition.

Under the current RCI guidelines, candidates are eligible with a four-year B.A./B.Sc. degree in Psychology from a UGC-recognized university with at least 55% aggregate marks.

For SC/ST candidates, the minimum requirement is 50%.

Candidates who have completed a three-year undergraduate programme in Psychology must complete either the prescribed fourth-year Bridge Course or the first year of a Master’s programme in Psychology, with the required marks, before becoming eligible.

CIP’s final 2027 prospectus should be consulted for any additional institutional requirements.

CIP has traditionally conducted one of the more competitive Clinical Psychology entrance examinations in India. The examination covers Psychology broadly and includes both factual and conceptual questions.

The previous CIP prospectus did not prescribe a detailed topic-wise syllabus or weightage; it simply stated that the entrance examination would contain questions of M.A./M.Sc. Psychology standard.

The focus of the examination also changes from year to year. One year may contain more questions from Research Methodology and Statistics, while another may give greater emphasis to Clinical Psychology, Cognition, Social Psychology, Personality, Biopsychology or Psychological Testing. Therefore, preparing only according to the previous year’s paper can be risky.

Research Methodology & Statistics: Research designs, sampling, reliability, validity, experimental methods, central tendency, parametric and non-parametric tests and related statistical concepts.

Clinical & Abnormal Psychology: Psychological disorders, differential diagnosis, psychotherapy, therapeutic approaches, DSM/ICD and important clinical concepts. However, CIP is not simply a DSM-based examination, and candidates should prepare Psychology much more broadly.

Cognitive Psychology & Learning: Learning theories, conditioning, memory, perception, attention and applications of learning principles.

Social Psychology: Social cognition, attitudes, attribution, compliance, conformity, aggression and major theories and experiments.

Personality & Developmental Psychology: Major personality theories, developmental theories, stages, theorists and related concepts.

Biopsychology: Neurons, neurotransmitters, hormones, sleep, brain structures and other biological bases of behaviour.

Psychological Testing: Important psychological tests, their developers, applications, subtests, reliability, validity and basic assessment principles.

Outliers are also an important part of the CIP examination. Previous papers have included unexpected questions from less frequently studied or highly specific topics, including particular researchers, terminology, psychological tests, historical details and niche concepts.

The number and nature of these questions change from year to year, and we expect outliers to continue playing an important role in the 2027 examination.

Under the previous M.Phil. Clinical Psychology system, CIP conducted a:

Computer-Based Test: 100 MCQs
Duration: 60 minutes
Marks: 100
Negative Marking: None
Practical/Interview: 50 marks

Candidates shortlisted on the basis of the CBT were called to CIP Ranchi for the Practical/Interview, and final selection was based on the combined performance in both stages.

For the new M.Clin.Psy. programme, the current RCI guidelines prescribe a written entrance examination followed by an interview, with:

Written Entrance Examination: 70% weightage
Interview: 30% weightage

CIP’s exact M.Clin.Psy. examination format will be confirmed only when the new admission prospectus is released.

For the 2025 M.Phil. Clinical Psychology examination, the CBT was conducted in:

Mumbai, New Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Ranchi.

Shortlisted candidates attended the Practical/Interview at CIP Ranchi.

The examination centres for the 2027 M.Clin.Psy. entrance examination are yet to be announced.
